Assessment

Countingup is a business current account whose app also keeps the books: it sorts transactions into categories, matches receipts, sends invoices and estimates tax as money comes in. Use it when the owner does the bookkeeping and wants to skip separate accounting software. Plans are priced by how much is paid in each month, from ~$7 to ~$27.

Counting Ltd was founded in London, England, in 2017 by Tim Fouracre, who earlier ran Clear Books, and Tom Platt became chief executive in November 2023. Accounts are now provided by Griffin Bank, so eligible deposits are covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme up to ~$161,000. The company reports more than 100,000 small-business users, and its accounts for the year to March 2025 show a loss of ~$3.1M.

It fits a UK sole trader, freelancer or small company owner who wants fewer apps and simple tax estimates. It is a weaker fit for a business that pays suppliers abroad often, given the 3% FX fee, or one that needs an overdraft.

Rating by criterion

Each of the eight criteria below is scored out of 100.

Sector criteria

Accounts and money movement72

The account has a UK sort code and account number with a Mastercard debit card, and accounts at Griffin Bank carry FSCS cover. Each plan includes three free transfers a month, then ~$0.36 each. Some customers still hold e-money accounts with PrePay Technologies, which are safeguarded and not FSCS-protected.

Spend and cards66

Each account comes with a Mastercard debit card, and card spending is categorised for the books. ATM withdrawals cost ~$1.34 and foreign card spending carries a 3% fee, so it suits domestic spending.

Bookkeeping and admin tools84

Bookkeeping is the core: transactions are categorised automatically, receipts are captured in the app, invoices are sent and tracked, and tax pots and live tax estimates show what to set aside. Profit and loss reports update as money moves.

Integrations and open banking64

Countingup is designed to replace separate accounting software, so it offers fewer links to outside tools than a plain account with a feed into Xero or QuickBooks. Check export options with the accountant before switching.

Vendor criteria

Product depth and roadmap74

Countingup has added tax pots, deposit protection through Griffin and insurance introductions. The product stays focused on the self-employed and small companies.

Onboarding and support78

Accounts open in the app with a three-month free trial, which gives time to test the bookkeeping before paying.

Pricing transparency82

Pricing is published: ~$7, ~$16 or ~$27 a month depending on monthly pay-ins, three free transfers then ~$0.36 each, ATM withdrawals at ~$1.34 and a 3% FX fee.

Contract terms74

Plans are billed monthly. Read the terms on closing an account and exporting records before leaving.

How this review was created

This profile gives our own assessment of Countingup to companies selecting a Business banking & treasury provider. The Fintech Index receives nothing for featuring a firm, for sponsorship, or for advertising, and Countingup gave us no payment for the profile.

The rating equals the average of eight criteria, with every criterion running from 0 to 100. Four address buyer needs in this sector, and four address the company together with its commercial terms.

Ratings are our editorial judgment, made from public information: pricing and legal pages, product documentation, compliance disclosures, and filings. Fact-checking took place on October 22, 2026.
