Assessment
TrueLayer is used by online merchants and platforms in the UK and Europe, from eBay and Ryanair to betting and food-delivery brands, that want customers to pay straight from a bank account instead of by card. It suits high-volume checkouts, fast payouts such as refunds or winnings, and repeat payments from a saved bank account. TrueLayer does not publish prices, and its closest competitors are Volt, Yapily, Token.io, and GoCardless.
TrueLayer was founded in London, England, in 2016. It holds a UK e-money license from the FCA and an Irish payment institution license from the Central Bank of Ireland, and it bought Zimpler, a Swedish pay-by-bank company, in March 2026. Group revenue for 2025 was about $38M, up 39% on 2024, with a loss of about $45M.
It fits a merchant with many UK or European customers who will pay by bank, especially where card fees, chargebacks, or slow payouts are a real cost. It is a weaker fit for a merchant whose customers are mostly outside Europe or expect to pay by card.
