Justin Benson is chief executive of Spreedly, the Durham, North Carolina, company that lets online merchants store cards in one vault and route payments across many gateways. Born in Australia, he came up through enterprise software sales and joined Spreedly as chief executive in 2011. Read our review of Spreedly.

First Support Hire at Intraware

He started his career in the San Francisco Bay Area, California, as the first technical support employee at Intraware, an early-stage startup. The company grew from 40 to 400 people in three years, went public, and was acquired, and he was promoted through business development and sales into senior management, GrepBeat reported. He then joined SafeNet as VP of Sales for the Americas before moving to North Carolina.

Building Spreedly in Durham

At Spreedly he led a pivot in how the company sold its product, and in 2019 he raised $75M from Spectrum Equity. "We sit between merchants and their payment providers, and we let them route payments based on a ton of business or geographical rules," he told GrepBeat.

In September 2025 Spreedly bought Dodgeball, a fraud orchestration company. "You can't optimize payments without addressing fraud, and you can't fight fraud without understanding the payment flow," he said in Spreedly's announcement.

Merchants and AI Agents

In March 2026 he told PYMNTS that merchants still own checkout and carry fraud and chargeback risk when an AI agent makes a purchase. "The merchant didn't want to be disintermediated," he said, as quoted by The Financial Technology Report.
